Brunch in Budapest's Jewish Quarter: 7 Spots Near the Ruin Bars

Checked in September 2026. Our own bistro, Bistrology, is one of the seven places on this list. Addresses, opening hours, reservation rules and prices come from each place's own website.

Short answer: Within a ten-minute walk of Szimpla Kert and the Dohány Street Synagogue there are at least seven places that serve breakfast or brunch all morning: Bistrology, Cirkusz, STIKA, Kaptafa, Vinyl & Wood, Grumpy and Pantry. All of them open between 7:30 and 9:00 and close between 15:00 and 17:00. The signature egg and brunch dishes we compared cost 3,400 to 4,650 HUF.

Why brunch is a Jewish Quarter habit

The Jewish Quarter is the old heart of District VII (Erzsébetváros). It has the Dohány Street Synagogue on one side and the ruin bars on the other. The first of those bars, Szimpla Kert, opened in 2002 and moved to Kazinczy utca 14 in 2004, according to Lonely Planet and its history page.

So the neighbourhood has three kinds of breakfast guests. People who were out late want a slow, late breakfast. People visiting the synagogue want something quick nearby. And many visitors sleep in apartments with no hotel breakfast.

Staying in an Airbnb in District VII? Breakfast is up to you

District VII has more short-term rentals than any other central district of Budapest. According to AirDNA figures analysed by Ingatlan.com and reported by Telex in May 2026, 3,219 homes in the district operate as Airbnbs. That is 8.4% of all homes there, against a Budapest average of 1%.

If your apartment is on Dob, Kazinczy, Király or Dohány utca, all seven places in the table are within a short walk. Two practical points:

If you arrive early with luggage, Cirkusz opens at 7:30, and Bistrology, Pantry, Vinyl & Wood and Grumpy at 8:00.
If you check out at 10:00 or 11:00, pick a place where you can book or phone ahead, so you don't queue with your bags.

The morning after the ruin bars

If you were at Szimpla Kert or one of the courtyards on Kazinczy utca last night, you are looking for three things: food that settles the stomach, something cold to drink and a short walk.

Some places build a dish around this. Cirkusz has a "Recovery breakfast" (7,800 HUF). Kaptafa lists a morning beer and a pálinka on its menu.

At Bistrology our answer is Hungarian: goulash soup served in a bread cup (5,190 HUF) or beef stew with dumplings (5,990 HUF), on the same menu as the eggs and croissants. With them we serve fresh orange juice, homemade lemonades and Costa Coffee, and there is a mimosa for anyone who wants one.

Breakfast near the Dohány Street Synagogue

The synagogue is at Dohány utca 2. The two closest places on the list are Pantry (about 2 minutes) and Bistrology (about 4 minutes, 330 metres along the same street).

If you plan to see the synagogue first, check its visiting hours and security rules on the official website before you go. Having breakfast first and walking down Dohány utca afterwards works well: the 4-minute walk is one straight line.

STIKA

Kaptafa

Akácfa utca 37-39, open 9:00-15:30. A brunch-only place that works mostly on walk-ins. Groups of six or more can book by exception, with a deposit. At busy times tables are for one hour. Mrs. Molnar costs 3,400 HUF. Kaptafa adds an optional 12% service charge. kaptafa.hu

Vinyl & Wood

Dohány utca 5/B, open every day 8:00-15:00. You build a plate from 3, 5 or 7 items (3,950, 6,550 or 9,200 HUF), plus a 12.5% service charge. No reservations. Of the seven, it is the closest to the synagogue and to Astoria metro. pantry.hu
